OHSAS 18001 Certification Position Statement

Summary: The Automotive Industry Action Group Health, Safety, and Environmental Steering Committee firmly believes that the use of formal management systems' are necessary for the effective management of health safety and environmental programs, and thus fully endorse ANSI Z10 and International Organization of Standardization (ISO) programs such as ISO's 14001 environmental management standard. * We believe that management of safety and health as part of an existing management system is necessary to achieve overall HSE excellence.

Chemical Management and Reporting Advisory Group
This work group's goal is to commonize the OEM's restricted and reportable chemical lists and minimize the differences as it relates to levels of reportability and process for reporting. This will be done in an effort to decrease cost and confusion in the reporting process. This will result in product issues and resource savings for both the supplier base and the OEMs. This Advisory Group will design, implement and manage systems to address all regulatory and customer issues (e.g., IMDS, REACH, Green Chemistry).

This committee works under the guidance of the Health, Safety and Environmental Steering Committee. The mission of this group is to:
  • Define the global impact of emerging chemical management or product stewardship regulations on the automotive industry
  • Support the development and operation of chemical reporting processes to meet both regulatory and customer requirements
  • Interact with other automotive associations on regulatory, customer and reporting requirements
Greenhouse Gas Work Group
AIAG Greenhouse Gas Work Group will plan sequential sessions that will teach the participants how to use the common AIAG sponsored GHG emissions reporting system. Having a common and accepted system which is accepted by the OEM's and Supply base will eliminate duplicate reporting requirements, support a common, comparable, and compliant reporting process, and will result in cost savings for the member companies.
Health and Safety Advisory Group
The purpose of this committee is to cover topics such as ergonomics, metal working fluids, pandemic preparation and provide the detailed support needed to improve health and safety within the automotive industry. This committee will engage at the international level regarding international standards and regulatory requirements.
Health, Safety and Environmental Leadership Work Group
Currently, there is no guidance document to help companies to benchmark and/or measure HSE leadership skills within their management team (CEO to line supervisors). The project is to develop a benchmark/guidance document detailing how management can effectively demonstrate the leadership skills needed to establish a foundation for HSE excellence, focusing on the key areas of 1) Participation, 2) Communication and 3) Understanding of Behavior Causation. The project will drive continuous improvement throughout the organization, and reduce HSE incidents. Work products will include a guidance document of best practices and tools (including measurement and audit), and if determined feasible, training materials for implementation of these best practices by member companies.
Health, Safety and Environmental Steering Committee
The AIAG Health Safety and Environmental Steering Committee is chartered to direct initiatives pertaining to occupational health, safety and environmental issues affecting automotive companies and suppliers. The goal is to bring attention to global occupational health and safety issues in the automotive industry, reduce the number of work -related injuries and illnesses and improve overall work environments.
Industrial Truck Advisory Group
The purpose of this committee is to cover topics related to Industrial Truck and Safety.
Pedestrian Presence Sensing Work Group
This committee has formed in 2009 to study pedestrian presence sensing devices. These devices are a relatively new technology that may reduce risk and need exploring. To aid the operator in identifying potential contact with equipment and pedestrians, presence sensing systems mounted on the vehicle to alert the operator of a potential strike may be the next level of integration and need to be evaluated. If you are a manufacturer, seller, or user of powered industrial trucks, we need you. This new committee will research, identify, and test available systems and devices. The results of this evaluation will be published and made available to the industry.
