Dimensional Markup Language International Standardization
DML is a XML Schema based specification, which defines feature actuals and feature measurement results from a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for a single manufactured part, sufficient for complete reanalysis. This project will progress the latest version of the DML specification (AIAG's DML D-23) to both a national (ANSI) standard and an international (ISO) standard, and will be a joint effort with the Dimensional Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC). The project will involve the performance of the following tasks:
  • Write a specification document for an XML data format, which meets the best practices of U.S. national standards documents and is suitable for formal standardization within ANSI and ISO.
  • Produce a revised XML schema that concisely encodes the DML data model, and enables efficient data processing for encoding and decoding data that is conveyed in DML files
  • Document the schema to enable software developers and quality experts to work together to develop commercial software applications that implement the DML specification accurately
  • Revise the D-23 data model when needed to incorporate new data elements or to simplify existing data structures
  • Continue the D-23 mission of considering information content from related standards and specifications, such as AP 219, ASME Y14.5, DMIS and QMD. Augment the current DML data model to include essential elements of these domains, and incorporate existing data definitions, names and terms where they already exist to harmonize the content and usage of DML with these domains.
