LCA Approaches in SC: Case of Lightweight Construction/Tires

The automotive industry is increasingly under pressure due to the growing ecological sensitivity of stakeholders. Companies face the challenge of finding ways to reduce the environmental burden of their vehicles. Since the biggest impact is produced in the use phase of a car, lightweight constructions are a hot topic in the auto industry. But are new lightweight constructions an improvement when taking the entire life cycle into account? What has to be done to enable such a life cycle assessment? These and other questions are the focus of this presentation on German research activities. The second part of this session describes life cycle analysis in the tire industry. How is the tire industry helping the auto industry improve its carbon footprint? How is it responding to sustainability challenges such as reducing carbon emissions and end-of-life recycling? How is it preparing for the future of mobility?
