Trading Partner Labels Implementation Guideline

This guideline has been published to combine the B-10, Trading Partner Labels Implementation Guideline, the B-12 Quick Receive Guideline, and the B-14, Guideline for Use of Two Dimensional Symbols with AIAG Trading Partner Labels into one cohesive document. The wealth of data required on today's shipping labels, updates to the referenced documents, and the need to review them in building an effective shipping label required this integration. This guideline, originally issued in 1995 and revised in 2000 by the AIAG Bar Code Applications Work Group, describes the template for bar code labels on shipping containers - both unit loads and transport packages - to convey data between trading partners in the automotive industry. The B-10 guideline is the preferred format for shipping labels, alternative to the previous AIAG automotive-industry-only standards, B-3 and B-5. Both label- and tag- marking methods for shipping containers and pallets of parts and primary metals are covered in this guideline under the general term "label," however, the B-10 is not a label, but rather a methodology for designing trading partner shipping labels using the ANSI MH10.8.1 U.S. national, cross-industry standard, developed and maintained by the ANSI committee MH10/SBC-8. B-10 outlines the requirements for design and for printing to ensure scannability of Code 39 bar code symbols and provide consistency of label formats. The physical parameters of the symbols and labels are provided and a bar code quality level is specified. The orientation and placement of AIAG B-10 - Trading Partner Labels (B-10-TPL) on shipping containers are specified. The use of two-dimensional (2D) symbols on the B-10 label, including specifications for MaxiCode and PDF 417, is defined in the AIAG B-14 publication, Guideline for Use of Two-Dimensional Symbols with AIAG Trading Partner Labels. The major changes in this B-10 revision are:

  • Correction of problems and oversights which have been identified since the initial publication in 1995
  • New formatting designed to be easier to read and to use as a reference.
  • A new section to provide guidance for customers defining their inbound label specifications on a standardized method for presenting the specification to suppliers.
  • A new section with an automotive-industry variation to the ANSI MH10.8.1 standard, to be used on shipping containers where the labeling area is less than 4 inches by 6 inches.
NOTE: Companies designing new shipping label applications should use this AIAG B-10 Trading Partner Label Guideline, which complies with U.S. national (ANSI) and international (ISO) standards in preference to either the B-3 or AIAG B-5 AIAG label standards, which are no longer being revised. B-3 and B-5 should be considered obsolete, unless your customer specifically requires its use.
