Risk Based Audit Days Project

AIAG is pleased to report an update to the Risk Based Audit Days project!

Previously, in automotive 3rd party IATF 16949 audits, the number of audit days were based solely on employee headcount at the site(s). Due to a greater focus on supplier performance to the IATF OEMs, however, this approach did not appropriately align audit time with QMS risks.

Moving forward, the IATF has agreed to modify the process by adding audit days for sites where supplier performance to IATF OEMs has been demonstrated to be unacceptable. These modifications can be seen in the IATF Rules 5th Edition Sanctioned Interpretations (SIs) #26, #27, and #28, and in the IATF Stakeholder Communique 2021-001 (Implementation of Risk Based Audit Days).

Links to the relevant IATF Stakeholder Communique and IATF Rules Sanctioned Interpretations are provided below.

Note: The Rules 5th Edition Sanctioned Interpretations #26, #27, and #28 referenced above will be carried over into Rules 6th Edition, which is currently under development.

While this project is now closed, please feel free to contact us at quality@aiag.org with questions or suggestions for additional risk based audit days approaches.
