Rethinking Artificial Intelligence in the Automotive Supply Chain

By Russ Ortis, VP of IT

Introduction

As VP of IT, I watch the intersection of technology and automotive manufacturing evolve daily. The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence promised a revolution for our supply chain. Yet, for many professionals, leaning on general-purpose artificial intelligence tools is proving to be a massive liability. Public AI chatbots hallucinate. They lack the nuanced context of our industry, and they cannot distinguish between a widely accepted standard and an unverified opinion. Today, I want to share my perspective on why relying on these general tools for critical compliance, quality, or corporate responsibility decisions is dangerous, and why a purpose-built system like AIAG’s Virtual Assistant (AVA) is the right technological solution when reliable answers matter.

The Danger of Unverified Intelligence
The automotive industry is facing a knowledge crisis. Workforce reductions, internal role shifts, and retirements are amplifying the loss of institutional knowledge. This risk is heightened in a high-stakes environment where a single misunderstood or misapplied quality standard can halt production, as professionals are drowning in abundant data but starving for verified, actionable knowledge.

We have also spent decades operating in silos. Companies have hoarded knowledge, treating basic compliance and quality interpretations as competitive advantages. In today's landscape of rapid technological shifts and next-generation mobility, this closed-door mindset is a roadblock to progress.

A Catalyst for Radical Collaboration
True innovation requires radical collaboration. The real breakthrough is not just having an artificial intelligence tool. It is having a secure, expert-vetted system that understands the exact realities of our industry — a single source of truth. This is the driving philosophy behind the AIAG Virtual Assistant, or AVA.

AVA represents a fundamental shift in our daily ways of working. By training a smart virtual assistant exclusively on the comprehensive, legally safe AIAG library of standards and best practices, we are creating a competition-free forum. It is a place where rivals can access the same foundational truths, turning competition into cooperation at the challenge-solution intersection.

Shared Intelligence for the Future
When a quality engineer at a Tier-1 supplier and a program manager at an OEM use the same expert-trained system to clarify a complex guideline, we eliminate friction. We drive down cost and complexity. We elevate industry standards across the board.
The future of the automotive industry does not belong to the companies with the best isolated data. It belongs to the organizations that know how to leverage collective, verified knowledge to solve shared challenges. AVA is a critical step toward that future, proving that when we align technological brilliance with a collaborative purpose, we can transform ideas into excellence.
